Are We Teaching or Babysitting?

Are We Teaching or Babysitting?

No but really, Do you want your child to learn or do you want us to babysit?

Many times teachers are often met with confrontation if they tell parents just how bad their kids are doing? Many times it’s “Well, what are y’all doing to help?" or "Well, last year nobody told me they weren’t on grade level!” To that I have two responses. Is it that they didn’t tell you because you would’ve had an attitude? Or is it because they told you, but you just didn’t take it serious? As long as the teacher doesn’t call, many parents see this as them having a good teacher. But as soon as they are confronted with the hard truth that actually your baby is not where they need to be academically.

Now don’t get me wrong. Not all parents are this way. But unfortunately many are. Sad truth, I ran across a viral post on Facebook where a mother put, “I don’t mean any harm but if I’m at work, why do you keep calling me about what my child is doing at school?” Really? Probably because your child’s teacher is at work and they want to be able to do their job too!

So I ask, do you want us to teach your child? Or do you want us to babysit?
